Should I use Automated Newsletters with distribution lists?

A distribution list is a list of email addresses that allows senders to email a group of people all at once, without having to individually add recipients. It is absolutely okay to add distribution lists as recipients of Automated Newsletters. However, there are some things you should consider:

Advantages of using distribution lists with Automated Newsletters

  • Advanced Feedly for Market Intelligence or Threat Intelligence teams are limited to 250 Automated Newsletter recipients, and Standard teams are limited to 100 recipients. Distribution lists are a great way to send to a larger audience, without going over your limit.
  • You might not want to disclose your newsletter recipients in Feedly and prefer to hide them behind a distribution list.
  • You can manage your subscribers in your own active directory rather than in Feedly.

Disadvantages of using distribution lists with Automated Newsletters

  • The breadth of the analytics you can track to monitor the performance of your newsletter is limited. You can check total opens and total clicks, but not unique opens or unique clicks.
    • Unique clicks describes the number of individual recipients who have clicked on one or more articles. If you’ve added a distribution list as the sole recipient of your newsletter, for example, you will always see only one unique click, because our analytics interpret those clicks as coming from a single email address.
    • Total clicks describes the total number of clicks on all articles across the issue. This can include multiple clicks from the same recipient.
  • You won't be able to view which individual subscribers are engaging with content.
  • You can add a subscribe button in your Automated Newsletters to allow new recipients to subscribe themselves. However, they won’t be automatically added to your distribution list — you’ll still need to manually add them to your list.
  • You can't allow readers to unsubscribe on their own via an unsubscribe button in your Automated Newsletters. If a recipient on a distribution list clicks “unsubscribe,” they will inadvertently unsubscribe the entire list. To unsubscribe an individual, you’ll need to manually remove them from your distribution list.
